Insights into justice-centering in science education
Justice-centered Ambitious Science Teaching (JuST) Framework
The JuST Framework is a research-based approach to science education that integrates equity, critical consciousness, and scientific sensemaking. Developed through collaboration between the University of Rochester, University of Connecticut, and IslandWood, the JuST Lab supports educators in transforming their classrooms into spaces where students not only learn science, but also use it as a tool for justice and social transformation.
At the heart of the framework are four core JuST practices:
- JuST 1: Center learning on justice-focused, locally relevant scientific phenomena.
- JuST 2: Highlight and sustain diverse cultural perspectives and student experiences.
- JuST 3: Critically examine how science and education can reinforce or challenge inequity.
- JuST 4: Support students in taking action based on their scientific learning.
Together with high-leverage teaching strategies and a deep commitment to equity, JuST practices foster belonging, joy, and empowerment in science classrooms. The framework guides educators in expanding what counts as science, who it serves, and how it can be a force for social transformation.
